I don't recommend that anyone get a sniper rifle unless they're really patient enough to snipe. Most people I know get bored too quickly to snipe. If you like one shot kills, firing less than 60 BB's in 6 hours wourth of play, laying in the dirt for long periods of time, getting eaten by bugs, wondering, "how the hell can he see me with this ghillie suit on," only to get shot through some bushes by some wacko with an AEG, then sniping is for you.

Those few times, when you get headshots on the 2 enemies spraying BB's at your friends who are stuck in a bad position... make sniping worth it.

I see that this thread has pulled quite a few pages...

My two cents:

If he knows what he is doing, let him. Example:

A Close Quaters Combat person picks up some average sniper thinking that he/she can have the thrill of a lifetime by sitting on a hill pegging people with camo on. So they get it, completly ignoring the pages upon pages of warnings here on AirsoftRetreat. Then they go into their airsoft game where they know that they should take cover on high ground or in dense area. He spots a hill and pitch their 'HQ' on the hill. (or perch, whatever the common sniper prefers) So now he has a good area to maintain and take cover as opposing airsofters pass by. Sitting on the hill this person gets board, as this is sniper's first 'con' to the regular airsoft game.
He is ready to kill on sight, but suddenly relizes that he/she has a sniper, not some CQB gun. Awe...How sad... He spots someone. He uses horrible tatics and attempts to fire upon the team out of range and low on cover. He is then ambushed by the team that he had been firing on. Why? Because he had been using bad strategy and it ended up killing him through the team's ability of numbers. So now this person is very, very dissapointed because he has wasted lots of money on something that doesn't suit him at all... (that is why they should sell their sniper for cheap on the nets...)

The last part mite be a little hard to understand, but basically I wanted to underline that you need to completly understand the role of a sniper. Not just a person with a gun, but the overall tatics and accuracy. (and some others...)

You should inform anyone who thinks that sniping in a game is just "fun", or "easy" to actually wake up and notice the con's to it. I am not downsizing this type of play at all, just making sure that people know what they are getting into.

I had some time on my hands, so I created a little scene so new possible potential snipers are informed.

sorry in advance for spelling errors

i have a few problems with some things said in here. first the fact that a sniper is not about a long range weapon, they are about stealth and letting the enemy get close enough to shoot with a spring pistol. well if you are this kind of person (i have nothing against you) then why dont you just save yourself a lot of money and use a spring pistol? or better yet an aeg to kill your opponent in a hail of plastic. im sorry to offend but that is not what a sniper is about. I feel that a sniper should use his range as an advantage. Fire from a long distance, make your oppenent duck for cover, maybe get a kill or two and then retreat back. set up another ambush rinse and repeat. plus all this time, you can gain intel on your enemy. i am not trying to criticize, simply point out what i feel a sniper is and should do.

second all the people talking about how a sniper needs to be patient and steady and willing to eat dirt, etc. how they cant just go in gun blazing and wipe out entire teams. DUH. anyone who thinks a 4ft long gun that is bolt action or semi auto would be good for cqb should not be playing anything with shooting or guns. I would be surprised to see a person like this who can remember to breath. a snipers job is to gather intel, demoralize the enemy, and kill key players (commanders or the most dangerous players in a squad)

finally i dont understand why a noob should not be given a sniper rifle. they should not use a pistol because only "true" snipers should use these.<- sarcasm toward paragraph #1. as for aegs ask yourself this question. in the picture on the first page: how did a sniper manage to get of 10 or so shots at close enough range to break skin before the player had time to duck, fall on the ground, run away, turn, cover his face, raise his hands, proclaim he was out, beat the sniper over the head with his own gun, etc. the shooter obviously had an automatic. this shows that noobs should not be allowed aegs. leaving sniper rifles. call me stupid but i think that it is good to teach noobs that running in gung-ho guns blazing is not a good strategy compared to shooting from a safe place.

well now that i have pissed you all off, i will end my rant. in the words of that guy out of fantastic 4 "flame on"
aka flame away on me (after all my ghillie suit is fire retardant )

I am not realy a sniper person either but I like playing that on our team I dont like the thought of working a bolt after every shot becuase when you need to reload after out of clips your screwed so a want to get a mauser rifle with 5 or so spare clips since that and a side arm would be all that i need.

Only recommended starter sniper is a super 9. Even when you advance your sniping skills you might still even keep this - it shoots perfectly well when you first buy it, and itll shoot even better if you upgrade to a 170% spring and get .25-.30 weight BB's. It shoots with slightly less effiency than a 300 dollar sniper airsoft will get you, but for 70 bucks and the cost of minor upgrades ( scope, spring- which costs like 60 bucks) a super 9 is a great bargain.
and if you think you're a hotshot and can take 3 on 1 with just a super 9- you're wrong. I've got two sidearm gas revolver pistols equipped into my belt holsters incase of close-combat scenarios (revolvers may not be a good weapon of choice for sidearms - i'm just a huge fan of them). A gas gun may also be a good sidearm, seeing you dont have to manually cock them (unless you dont buy a blowback gun, which completly demeans gas guns if it doesnt blowback). Also electric guns work well as sidearms.

To sum up what i said into a few words:

Super 9 = great sniper to start with. Gas powered blowback sidearms recommended, or electric guns.

the super 9 is possibly the worst sniper to start with.....its a peice of sh*t....it falls apart and has the WORST accuracy i have ever seen....it would make a begginer sniper think sniper rifles are pointless....u migh as well run around with a straw and blow the bb;s out

I got the S9 as my first gun and I ended up unhappy. After about 2 years of play I had gotten very, very good with it( or atleast as good as you can get with an S9) but I wasnt happy with it until I got a Gas pistol and an Electric rifle. So if I were you friend, I would buy a spring pistol and see if you like the thought of sitting back during a game. Then upgrade if you would like !! I hope this helped!

Ok, for people that continuously rip on the super 9, a few minor modifications can get you some pretty good range and accuracy. The fixed hopup is decent if you do not get a lemon, simply widening the nozzle to 1/8 inch adds another 40 fps onto the gun, and adding another small length of spring adds another 30-40. Mine was up to about 370, but after more than a year of use, it is back down to about 330 fps (still goes through both sides of coke can, but just barely). It proved itself more effective than your average GBB.

Now that the new "UTG sniper" is out, that is most certainly a better option for those people who want a "cheap" or "budget" rifle. I just have to tell my "super 9 story" every time I hear someone say something like "your better off blowing bbs through a straw". I understand that this is probably exagerration, but some people that say this actually sound serious.

Three words - Whoa Thats impressive ! Tea Em Em 14

All jokes aside the M-14 Is a great weapon if your not sure wether you want to get into sniping or assault or any other role, As it gives you the ability to switch between alot. Great DMR Platform. W/ A real wood stock, ACOG 4X Crosshair scope, 500FPS upgrade And a leather sling - Now if you deny thats not just plain sexy, You need a check up from the neck up
