Internet Safety Tips

Please read before it's too late.

With ONLY A NAME, PHONE NUMBER, or ADDRESS someone with the knowledge could EASILY find out where you live as well as any other information they're interested in.

NEVER give out more personal information than needed.

  • Only give your general location. EX. Long Island, NY.

After others have replied and said they are in your area, consider the following:

  • What is their history on AS-R as well as other forums.

  • The Probation title can be a big help in deciding who is trustworthy. Not that they all aren't, but just a precaution and something to think about.

  • If they have been on AS-R to make it to at least the Captain Rank without getting in trouble, I'd trust them a LITTLE more since they've been here long enough for more people to know them.

After you have gone through most of the consideration of their trustworthiness, consider doing one of the following:

  • Chat with them on AIM

  • Send them a few e-mails

  • Give them a phone call

Ask them some questions. Only give them as much information as how much VALID information they have given.

These are only precautions and suggestions. NEVER GO TO A STRANGER'S HOUSE! This may sound like a kindergarten lesson, but hundreds of people get into trouble each year because they do not take the necessary precautions.

Only YOU can keep yourself safe.
--------------------------------------------------------------------

If you have a question about a member, e-mail other members and ask about them. Don't be afraid. I wouldn't be mad if someone questioned my trustworthiness.

YOU make the final decisions. It is up to YOU who you will trust.

If you would like to add comments or any stories you may have, please do.

I have to really emphasize the references, and mostly the phone call. You call them, and talk with somebody, and whenever I make large sales, I give people the option of calling me on the phone. Phone numbers themselves give you lots of information, and it's a lot easier to find out more by just talking over the phone, especially since you can ask if they have the item with them, and you can get real time answers to detailed stuff pretty easily.

The best thing you can do is carry out lots of businesslike correspondence, and use your head. Besides that, don't make much of your information public ever, it's already too easy to learn about people.

Don't feel bad assuming the worst about people, since there's lots of ways to demonstrate trustworthiness.
