the Well P-90, despite it's many, many flaws is a pretty gun.it's comfortable, it's mobile and it jsut looks nice. i want it to shoot decently. Now, having read the reviews before i bought it, i was surprised to find that it has a ~foot long metal barrel. and, if i could get it to feed properly, would fire really, really fast. so what i plan on doing, then, is a multi-tiered improvement plan. the first step would be to get it to feed properly. i've already got two possibilities for this.

1) modify the gravity fed magazine with a spring and a piece of cardboard covered in electrical tape (for durability) essentially, this piece would push the bbs, encouraging them more effectively into the barrel. i would also close off the area above the feeding hole, to better funnel bbs into the gun. i was also considering cutting a thing strip of plastic out of the middle of the bottom of the mag, running the entire length of the thing. i would put a little plastic piece in this, which would allow me to draw back the spring, and maybe a notch to lock it into place while loading.

2) if at all possible, i could modify the gun itself to take the TM mags, and then ust pick up a high-cap. but there's two basic problems with this. namely, that's more than i want to spend on this project, and i don't even know if it's possible.

alright, that's the first part. i want to improve the gearbox. and by improve, i mean replace. the DE M4 gearboxes are 12 bucks a pop, so i could, concievably, pick one of those up, and scoop out some space in the p90 for it. there are a few problems there: the new motor would probably cost me some of the rate of fire, given the stronger spring. also, i'm not sure it would line up right with the barrel. the trigger mechanism is easy to work around, a bit of creative soldering, and i'm good. it's the first two things that are bothering me. i can find out easily enough, though, whether or not it lines up, since i have a DE M4, i can borrow the gearbox for a bit. i'd be hard pressed to hook it up completely, but it will work for a mockup.

that's the slim skinny of the plan. there might be something a tad, well, just MORE. i was looking at the P90 today. those of you who are familiar with the real steel FN Project 90 know that there is a rather large hole in the bottom, where the spent cartridges eject. i was thinking, what if i cut that out, rig up a magazine retention mechanism and modified it to take either DE SG223 or DE M4 magazines? personally, if it's at all doable, i think it would look hotter than hades. of course, the whole project is based on a lot of ifs and maybes, so we'll just have to see.

thoughts? suggestions? questions? insults?

I say fool around until you get something to work. I'd go with the mod a mag to work choice. Someone modded a mag to go in from the top before.

TM P90 highcaps suck. It's what turned me off from highcaps.

they look gravity fed, which is one of the things making me lean towards my first idea. why give up one grav fed for another, ya dig?

The P90 highcaps are not gravity fed. Neither are the standards.

oh, yeah, i remember seeing that a while back. i'm aiming for something a little closer to this:
http://www.hardcoil.net/airsoft/images/xa23/beta1_1.jpg
except, not quite as bitchin, and not nearly as expensive. i'd like the bullpup config, if i end up going that route. right now i'm trying to figure out a way to be able to flip the barrel assembly on the fly, which would allow me to use two different magazines, one feeding from the top, and one from the bottom. if i can figure that out, i'll definitely throw the spring in the p-90 mag, and certainly try to fit a M4 mag in there. might end up swapping out the barrel for one that isn't ported, not sure yet. does that affect FPS? cuz it seems like it should. it looks like i just picked up another P-90 for 25 shipped (accidently won it on ebay. long story.), so i'm going to get started on this project probably monday. i now can cut the crap out of the gun without hesitation.

It's just like other highcaps, but horizontal. But not only does it no feed reliably (50 rounds at a time), but you can't wind it while it's in the gun.

It's crazy how you and I had nearly the same idea for the magazine, doofus333. I dremel cut a small space into the top going the length of the magazine to act as a guide for the two 'pushers' and to give me something to push with me thumb before locking the 'pushers' into the 'open' position when I load.

There are two small screws glued on the inside of the magazine, on either side, pointing into the center. There's a small spring coiled around each to act as a guide for the spring, which is attached at the other end by the 'pusher'. When empty, the two 'pushers' meet each other close enough to the BB exit hole in the magazine.

As BB's are pushed the only direction left for them to go (down into the chamber), the 'pushers' slowly get closer and closer together. More and more BB's get forced down into the chamber. This reduced the magazine capacity a great deal - I'd say it's currently set for only 30-60 BB's because of all the room the two spring guides take up.

The problem? The extra piece attached to each 'pusher' that sticks out of the roof of the magazine - I haven't got a one-piece 'pusher' yet, so the top part which helps the 'pushers' stay on track, keeps breaking off - especially when it's in its "load ready notch". It's so small, glued on crappily, and thin, and so on.

What I need is something that's like a rectangle, with a tiny rectangular tab at the top, perpendicular, and all as one piece.

yeah i was thinking about maybe cutting a bit of thin metal, maybe copper, or low gauge steel, to fit my needs. but the problem, as you may have encountered, is the four screws in the magazine. they're gonna get in the way. i could potentially just remove them and glue the top down when i'm finished, but i don't want to do that unless i have to. i also want something that wouldnt be too much a pain in the arse to do twice, as i'll e doing this to two magazines. does your apperatus work at all? what kind of spring did you use? any pics?

I actually plan on gluing the top together. Obviously there are times when I still need to open the whole thing up, so it's getting a little worse for wear. I expected the whole thing to work the first time.

I haven't been able to test it much because something is always breaking off. The few rounds I have gotten to fire consistently have been very promising - no shaking necessary, no dry shots - but that lasts only so long before my entire guide aparatus falls over, or inside. Lately the spring guides have been coming off the sides of the inside of the magazine. Ho hum.

I took the spring from this suction dart toy gun, and cut it in half. It was of a nice, small diameter, and it wasn't crazy strong. I thought it would be perfect.

I'm temporarily living in a different place for the next few months. That's actually why I've been doing this - starved for something to do. But my digicam is back at my other apartment.

So at this point, my magazine doesn't work well enough to say that it works.

why not make a revy for it lmfao.

just like the paintball guns revys just make a little 130 size mottor with paddles inside then hook a button up so when you shoot it turns on the motor and sturs up the bb's.

and if it dosent work and it sucks it would still be cool you would have the first airsoft revalution lol.

i had a new thought about this. instead of making one guiding strip in the bottom of the mag, i could make two, one on each side. then, i find a thin metal dowel, maybe 3mm in diameter, and cut it so it sticks out about a 1/4 of an inch on each side. drawing the spring back would be made easier, and less stressful on the guide piece, as pressure would be put on it from both sides, instead of just at one point. to lock it, it would be mounted to the pushing panel in the center, i would turn it about 5-10 degrees. the notches would be reverse mirror images of each other. this could potentially work, and would be a lot easier to pull off. i'll be hearing back from a potential employer on monday, so i think i'll hit up the local Ace before then, and pick up what i need. i might just take out the screws/ screw mounts of the inside of the mag, and rig up a clamp to hold it together. that would allow me to perform repairs on the mag without snapping glue. that's the easy part of the project. the hard part is going to be figuring out 1) how to get a DE M4 mag to feed and 2) figure out how to rotate the barrel/hopup assembly on the fly. i think i might actually install a few gears, and a piece i can push on the outside of the gun, so that i can just push a lever, and it will flip the assembly, and let the other mag feed. alternatively, i could just make a new feeding hole in the assembly, and rig up a way to cover whichever feeding hole i'm not using. i'll draw up a diagram next time i open the gun. i will, of course, post pics. i will be taking photos of the entire operation, and will post a step by step guide. also, if this works, or even just a few parts of it work, i will, for a fee, replicate it on any gun or mag that any of you feel like sending me. the fee will be small, jsut to cover parts, shipping and a bit for labor. jsut an entrepenurial plug. personally, i'd recommend, again, hoping against hope that this actually works, doing it yourself. i really really hope it does, because it would be nice to have a decent LPEG P-90. the total cost (including gun) shouldn't be more than 50 bucks. oh, quick question, anyone now a a slightly translucent flat black paint? i want to apply a coat to the mag, to make it darker, but still be able to see the bb count. also, what should i use to plug the feeding hole of the mag when not in use? making a plug out of rubber would work, but be difficult and probably not last that long.

uber:That's ... actually not such a bad idea. I hadn't thought of 'stirring' the BB's, and just keeping a hopper design.

doo:Outside-use 'BBQ spraypaint' takes several passes to completely coat clear plastic. I imagine with only a quick touch, you could effectively 'darken' it like you want.

The only trick to BBQ paint is to not even touch it for a couple of days, even if it looks dry - when it's applied to plastic it's easy to leave a fingerprint for the first while. However, I imagine since you'd be painting it a lot less this would be an unlikely problem for you.

that's a tad much for what i have in mind. you should add that to your rather long list of LPEG mods tho. it does sound like a cool idea, if you can pull it off.

Nah i would never get a pos p90 lol.

The idea on my mag mod would be placeing a nano or micro servo in the gun and then drill a hole in the mag and put a servo horn inside and make a paddle to move the bb's. then put bushing or flanged bearing in the holes you drilled and use a long screw or rod to hold the paddle in the bottom and hold it to the servo. this will make it so you just unscrew 1 screw and you can pop the mag out. you need to rewire the servo just put the + and - from the servo pc bord directly to the motor then just hook up a 50g micro switch and put it behind your trigger and wire it upto 6-7 volts or to your guns batt and when you shoot it turns on or you can use a momentary switch so you can use it on damand. heres a crappy quick diagram i made up to give you a idea of what it would be like and we can improve from there or change stuff on it.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

this way im thinking should be easy cheep work good and wont take the space of alot of bb's and will look custom and not like you slaped it togher and wraped it in duck tape.

as for the black paint i had some. its called nightshades i payed $6.99 for a can from a auto storr call ramchargers they got a website www.ramchargers.com if you cant find it call them. i used it on my sidemarkers on my camaro when i got my head light covers. its kinda like spray on window tint. i would say get that it goes on in light thin coats and i dident have any probs with it.

i have also tried working on improving the gravity fed clip. i have thought of using a spring to convert as a spring fed mag. i took a different approach by using a retractable key holders. you know those things that are connect to a retractable string, kinda how a measuring tape works. i took apart that piece and placed it right above the hole where the bbs enter. i had to gut the slanted thing and just used it to make a flat bottom for the clip. made a small box so it would fit in the mag. connected the retractable unit to the block so it would instead pull bbs towards the hole instead of a spring pushing. it was a promising concept but it was a pain in the ass. the problem i had was the bbs got stuck so it wouldnt feed. then the fishing line broke that was connected to the retractble thing. i was going to post up my idea when it was done but it didnt work. feel free use my idea. i just dont have time to work on it now

that is an interesting concept. if you get the time, you might want to add some sort of putty to the inside of the mag, where the bbs were getting stuck, so that only one bb at a time can go through. sort of a funnel. i'm sticking with my original plan tho, as the idea is in my brain, and i think the only way to get it out is to try it.

Mine only needs one wind, and usually fires all the BBs - I may remember a few times where I had 3-4 left..but it's been a while, so I'm not sure. I have yet to have a problem with the hicap..I think I've had it for two years now..
