The Classical Maneuvers of Warfare
By: X17 Source: Military History Course

Intro: These maneuvers where created in the "classical" time period, the times of great military commanders such as Alexander the Great and Caesar. During this period men fought with pikes, swords, and javelins. Though technology of warfare has evolved the maneuvers have not. Still today these maneuvers are are used in modern combat. Both at army strength and squad strength. And they are even effective in airsoft. Many of you have commanded your team in airsoft using these tactics and not even knowing it, mainly the Envelopment of Both Flanks which you will read about later. If you like to assume command in your airsoft skirmishes try some of these out, you will be surprised of they're effectiveness when deployed and done correctly.

1 of 5 Development of a Single Flank

Back  | Next

The objective of this maneuver is covertly position your reserve unit or other unit on the single exposed flank of the enemy. Forcing him to fight two fronts. B represents a barrier, this barrier can be anything, a lake, a cliff, a river. What ever the barrier is it should be able to limit maneuverability of the closes flank. R stands for Reserve. The reserve is the units one army has set aside to use at areas of the battle field when needed. X stands for units. These units may be phalanxes when speaking of ancient military or companies of soldiers when speaking of modern warfare.

Phase One: The attacking team (red) will do what is known as a faint attack. Their front lines will attack, make contact with the opposing force (blue), and then stage a retreat. The retreat is completely controlled. This is where the element of surprise comes in at phase two.

Phase Two: After witnessing its opponent fleeing from the battle field the blue force will commit it's reserves to action to help assist it's already committed troops. When this happens, the faint attacking force will turn from fleeing and hold again. This new holding pattern gives time for the red reserves to swing around to the exposed flank. It will then turn and "role down the flank" forcing the blue force to fight two fronts which will cripple the blue force and allow red to receive victory.
